Smart Client application allow teachers to write stories and
publish it smartly on the go, to a central story library
The Project: LearnPlay’s Reading Library
(Online Story Editor / Story Library Browser)
The Client
LearnPlay
LearnPlay is an independent, educational software development
company tuned towards students with learning disabilities.
The company’s mission is to develop, publish and distribute
cost-effective learning tools that support individual growth and
skill development with clear objectives, inviting graphics and
modern technological innovations. The LearnPlay education
software programs appeal to multiple learning styles, identify
individual student needs and differentiate instruction accordingly
with customized lesson plans. As such, the interest level in learning
remains high because students receive only the lessons required to
fill in missing gaps in their overall skills.
Business Situation
LearnPlay needed to develop an application for story writers that could
write stories on the go. LearnPlay wanted teachers in the field to
build a Central Story Library database with client side component
installed on their machines. The client side components will
communicate with the Central Library database and server side software.
The Stories then can be exported to LearnPlay’s products like
My Reading Coach and Fluent Reading Trainer.
LearnPlay was looking for a partner that understood their business and also
understood leading edge technology. Also LearnPlay was on a budget and this
was the first time they were planning to offshore an application.
After researching many firms LearnPlay chose AEC Tek to develop a solution.
The Solution
AEC Tek developed a Smart Client application with a well engineered Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based Web Services collection.

The teachers will use Smart Client application to write their stories and then the client will smartly talk to a collection of web services which are also well engineered using famous SOA and publishes the stories onto the Central Library database.
The Smart Client applications gave flexibility to the teachers who are always on field and may or may not be connected to the internet. So they can create stories when they are not connected to internet and then publish those stories whenever they get connected.
The teachers can create and edit stories which will be stored remotely in Central Database with version control.
LearnPlay can now export the created stories to their existing products like My Reading Coach and Fluent Reading Trainer and any future LearnPlay products with the help of a utility tool developed by AEC Tek.
Smart Client has a facility for teachers to create stories in English as well as foreign languages like French, German, Spanish and Portuguese.
The system will be easy to use and intuitive to operate for the end users
Business Impact
LearnPlay was surprised with the results of offshoring. Not only was the project delivered on time but the product was much superior than originally anticipated.
LearnPlay is now able to publish more than 1,000 stories at a time using this tool, leading to tremendous cost saving and administration overhead.
The Library Administrator module can now easily group the stories into Story Collections for the use in this system and other products of LearnPlay.
